Bring HWT to your School or District

There are a number of ways to introduce HWT to your school and help students with handwriting.

In-Service the Program

Now that you know that the Handwriting Without Tears program works, it’s time to share your knowledge. Plan short in-services that demonstrate the method, describe its benefits, and show your results to fellow educators. We can help you with this undertaking. Please contact us for assistance and materials to use when presenting a Handwriting Without Tears® in-service. We have scripts, overheads, and handouts to help you.

Introduce the HWT program

Talk about the current state of handwriting you see in your classrooms. Describe what you think a developmentally based teaching method should do. Tell people why HWT is different and better than what they are currently using. Describe the multi-sensory techniques and emphasize the cost benefits. Be sure to include information about how poor handwriting habits affect legibility of all written work as well as test scores.

Plan an HWT Workshop

Encourage your district’s staff development coordinator to plan a HWT workshop on a staff development day. We have an outstanding group of trained certified presenters who travel throughout the country and present HWT workshops. There is no maximum limit on attendance for a workshop, and sponsors can customize the grade levels and time allocated for the presentation.

Invite teachers, therapists, reading specialists, and administrators to attend. Continuing education credit hours are available for each training course. For more information on planning a HWT workshop, visit Workshops & Training.

Challenge the Effectiveness of Existing Curricula: Making the Comparisons

You know that Handwriting Without Tears is the best program for your school. Offer to prepare a curriculum comparisons of HWT and the other methods being used or considered. We can provide you a format for the comparison.

Here are the key points to address:

  • Vertical versus slanted style
  • Simple connections versus fancy strokes
  • Easy to follow step-by-step directions versus the display of only the completed model
  • Consistent, friendly terminology versus confusing teacher jargon
  • Two versus three or four lines
  • Clean, clear consistent pages versus busy and confusing pages
  • Adequate spacing between words versus small spaces that lead to run-on writing
