The Write Way to a Smooth Transition

Can-Do Cursive

FIFTH GRADE
By the fifth grade, students should be fluent in print and cursive. They are ready for more advanced writing exercises and for using cursive consistently in composition writing.

  • Begin the year by reviewing the correct sequence for forming and connecting cursive letters
  • Accept and encourage students’ personal styles
  • Continue with short, daily lessons
  • Introduce increasingly advanced writing assignments to help students improve their speed and legibility and other language arts skills
  • For students in fifth grade who need help with printing, introduce the Can-Do Print workbook

Regardless of grade level, it is important to be consistent and make writing fun. As your students’ handwriting improves, so will their performance in all their classes.
