Back to School The Write Way to a Smooth Transition By Katrina Erickson, OTR/L
PRESCHOOL
Preschool is the ideal time to help very young children develop good habits, social skills, motor skills and strength, and love of learning. They learn better with play-based, hands-on activities as they develop pre-writing skills including shape, color, and size awareness.
Use various hands-on activities to help young children build strength and motor skills
Teach chalk and crayon grip using small or broken bits of chalk or crayon that children can grasp easily and comfortably
Use music to teach children and encourage group play, cooperation, participation, movement, and imitation
Ask children to build and play to explore the world around them and make shapes, letters, and numbers
Have children draw and paint so they can develop movement and imitation skills and comfort holding writing and drawing tools
