Back to School The Write Way to a Smooth Transition By Katrina Erickson, OTR/L
SECOND GRADE
Quickly review all letters and numbers, starting with capitals. Your students will be doing a lot of independent writing and you want to ensure that they have good habits. Use direct teacher modeling, hands-on strategies, and supervised practice to teach students letters with which they are struggling. Make a second pass through the student workbook completing the word pages, then make a third pass completing the sentence pages. For advanced students, supplement the workbook lessons with creative writing and other language arts activities.
Focus on letters and numbers that are causing your students trouble
Show students how to form smaller letters and transition to paper with narrower line spacing
Require daily, brief writing practice to help students develop speed and fluency
Demonstrate for your students as you transition them to other styles of paper
