By Katrina Erickson, OTR/L

1st Grade

SECOND GRADE
Quickly review all letters and numbers, starting with capitals. Your students will be doing a lot of independent writing and you want to ensure that they have good habits. Use direct teacher modeling, hands-on strategies, and supervised practice to teach students letters with which they are struggling. Make a second pass through the student workbook completing the word pages, then make a third pass completing the sentence pages. For advanced students, supplement the workbook lessons with creative writing and other language arts activities.

  • Focus on letters and numbers that are causing your students trouble
  • Show students how to form smaller letters and transition to paper with narrower line spacing
  • Require daily, brief writing  practice to help students develop speed and fluency
  • Demonstrate for your students as you transition them to other styles of paper
